The short answer

Start by identifying the exact registration question: a new USDOT record, operating authority, a company update or a problem with an existing record. These are related decisions with separate dependencies.

New carrier: define the operation first

Describe cargo, compensation, freight movement, vehicles and ownership. FMCSA’s USDOT guidance and authority guidance address different requirements; do not choose applications from a company label alone.

Existing carrier: describe the change

Identify the official record, fields or status involved and any notice. Separate account access, company information and authority status so the review follows the correct transaction.

Plan the dependent work

Use a written launch or change checklist to track agency transactions, authorized process-agent or insurance-provider steps, documents and completion evidence. Ask which steps remain after an application is submitted.

Keep the company user in control

Use current FMCSA registration links and authorized access. The company user retains control over Login.gov, identity verification and recovery information. Confirm the service-provider permissions required for the agreed work.

What to prepare

What can delay or complicate the work

A practical review sequence

  1. Identify the exact request, entity and period.
  2. Compare available records and list missing facts.
  3. Agree on the supported work, permissions, provider steps and fees.
  4. Retain completion evidence and unresolved follow-up.

SafePass’s role

SafePass can review a request and scope supported administrative preparation, record organization or provider coordination. Availability is confirmed for the service and jurisdiction. The employer, qualified provider and responsible agency retain their own decisions and duties.

Frequently asked questions

Is Motus the same as an MC number?

No. Motus is FMCSA’s registration system; an authority identifier and official authority status are different concepts.

Can every carrier use the same application?

No. Review the role, cargo and operation before selecting the authority path.

What do I receive from supported preparation work?

Agree on a transaction checklist, submission/confirmation records and unresolved follow-up in the scope.

Can you guarantee approval?

No. FMCSA controls the official decision and status.
